Course breakdown

The 5K: simple and speedy

The 5K works perfectly for beginners or runners chasing a time. Entirely on paved road, it stays in the immediate vicinity of Downtown Park. With 13 m of elevation gain, you won't face any challenging climbs. A very easy route, great for beginners, according to runner reviews. Expect partially shaded sections in the early morning—a real advantage under August sun.

The half marathon: along the Sammamish River Trail

The half starts from Central Connector Park, just west of downtown and north of Marymoor Park, along Bear Creek Parkway. Runners first head south on the Heron Rookery Trail to Leary Way, then around the Bear Creek Trail before meeting up with Dudley Carter Park, where they head onto the Sammamish River Trail. This multi-use trail stretches nearly 11 miles through riverside parklands and farms.

Miles 0 to 5.5: heading north along the river

Once on the Sammamish River Trail, you'll spend the next 5.5 miles making your way north along the river, along its wide asphalt surface. The course is completely flat, fast with riverside views and plenty to do post-race in charming downtown Redmond. The trail is shared with cyclists: stay alert. Very scenic paved trail from Redmond up to Woodinville and back.

Miles 5.5 to 13.1: turnaround and back to the finish

After the turnaround at roughly mile 6.5, you retrace the same route. Same surface, same ease. Shade helps in the morning, but by 9-10am the sun heats up. The course closes at 11:30am, giving you solid time. The last mile brings you back to Downtown Park where the finish line, snacks, and beer garden await.

Early August in Redmond brings typical summer conditions. Expect high temperatures around 28°C (82°F) and lows around 15°C (59°F). Rain is rare at this time: only 9% of days see notable precipitation, with an average of 0.3 mm. Wind stays moderate (around 12 km/h). It can get warm, especially for the half which extends into mid-morning.

Dress light: singlet, breathable shorts, cap. Hydrate well before and during the race. The event is cupless: bring a handheld bottle, hydration pack, or grab a small reusable cup at the start.

Race strategy and tips

Start fast on the flat

With minimal elevation change, you can push from the start. No climbs to save energy for. Settle into your target pace by mile 2 and hold it. This course is built for PRs: take advantage.

Manage heat and sun exposure

The Sammamish River Trail offers shade in places, but some sections are exposed. If you're running the half and finishing after 9:30-10am, temperatures rise. Carry water, drink regularly at aid stations, and don't hesitate to splash water on yourself if needed.

Share the trail

The trail is open to cyclists and pedestrians. Stay right, listen for passing announcements, keep an eye on other users. It rarely causes real issues, but staying focused helps.

Prepare for the finish

The last mile brings you back toward Downtown Park. You'll be glad to see the finish line and beer garden. Push through: a strong finish time is within reach on this kind of course.

What makes this race special

Craft Classic Seattle has become a local classic for many runners. The post-race atmosphere is unique: a craft beer garden at the finish line sponsored by Georgetown Brewery, with beers at $6 and 100% of proceeds going to the Eastside Firefighters Benevolent Fund. The beer garden is really nice with tables and shade.

On the organization side, Orca Running is known for quality: well-organized events, plenty of swag and treats at the end, everything smooth, efficient, and professionally coordinated. Photos are free, unlike many other races.

The new Downtown Redmond Light Rail Station is now open: a 5-minute walk to the start/finish line and a 17-minute ride from downtown Bellevue. You can also park free in downtown Redmond or at the Park & Ride at 16160 NE 83rd St. Packet pickup happens the day before the race: grab yours to make race morning easier.
